Location
Agriturismo Montalbano is located within the Company’s vineyards in the eastern hills of Friuli, in the municipality of Povoletto, just 9 km (5.5 miles) from the city of Udine, amongst gentle rolling hills.
With a population of about 5500 inhabitants, the municipal territory reaches an average altitude of about 120 metres (394 feet) above sea level.
This area has always been involved in agriculture due to a combination of several factors, including the climate, the fertility of the soil and an age-old agricultural tradition that has been handed down from generations to generation since the town first sprung up.
Wine production, in particular, is of the highest level, both in terms of quantity and quality.
A large portion of Povoletto’s economy is based on wine production.

History
Povoletto shares the same historical background as many other municipalities in the province of Udine, which was largely colonized by the Roman Empire in the period between the first century BC and 4th-5th centuries DC, when Roman troops conquered a large part of present-day Friuli Venezia Giulia, carrying out a gradual process of land division.

This agricultural mind-set continued, as mentioned above, over the centuries, with a constant refinement in cultivation techniques and it is to this expertise that we have owe our success in the wine sector since the last century.
In subsequent centuries these lands came under the control of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, before submission to the Venetian Republic.

Food & Events

“Restaurants and trattorias, wineries and traditional festivals: the multitude of flavours in Friuli Venezia Giulia will amaze you at any time of year”.

Typical dishes and colourful culinary rites: you will only find such a variety of flavours and aromas in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Here, the interplay of different people, languages and traditions has enriched the food and wine: you can savour Middle-European, Mediterranean and Slavic influences, not to mention the delicious country cuisine with its simple, wholesome dishes, enriched with wild herbs and prepared in the countryside and in the mountains.

The ambassadors of the typical produce of Friuli Venezia Giulia are the now legendary prosciutto San Daniele (ham), montasio cheese and the prestigious regional wines: 8 DOC zones where DOCG wines are also produced, such as sweet Verduzzo, Cabernet, Refosco and Friulano. Why not visit a winery and discover the renowned hospitality of the ‘DOC’ producers!

The coastal cuisine of fish, seafood and shellfish creates dishes such as boreto di Grado(a type of fish stew), traditional Istrian scampi alla busara(scampi in spicy tomato sauce), sardoni (sardines) from the Gulf of Trieste and ribaltavapori(fried small fry) from Marano Lagunare.
Montasio, ricotta affumicata dal sapore di malga e formaggi sconosciuti, ma molto apprezzati, come il “formadi frant” e l’Asìno: scopri come la sapienza contadina, da generazioni e generazioni, crea sapori inimitabili.

Why not try montasio, smoked ricotta cheese from alpine dairies and other lesser-known, but greatly-appreciated cheeses such as formadi frant and Asìno? Farming know-how and wisdom, passed down from generation to generation, has crafted truly unforgettable flavours.

In addition to delicacies such as prosciutto di Sauris and prosciutto di Cormons(speciality hams), other cold cuts produced include salami, smoked ham and bacon, not to mention the unusual brusaola and pitina, smoked meatballs made of mutton, goat or game: a ‘slow food’ to be savoured at your leisure!

Il Frico(a soft or crispy cheese galette), with musèt and brovade (sausage and marinated turnips), is emblematic of Friuli cuisine, do not forget the cjarsòns della Carnia (a type of sweet or savoury ravioli) and gnocchi di susine (plum dumplings) from Gorizia, which illustrate the Middle-European influence.
Other delicious specialities to explore and enjoy include trout, (in particular the smoked variety, such as the Regina di San Daniele), honey, the Julia Dop apple, various grappa and oils, and the sweets and cakes of Slavic and Central European origin such as gubana and presnitz(rolled cakes filled with a variety nuts, dried fruit, sweet spices, etc.).

Guests will be able to taste all these products at the Osteria di Villa Fredda, still managed by the Braidot family or, more precisely, by Luca Braidot – Mauro’s brother – and his wife Barbara. The restaurant, whose beautiful stone walls date back to the 1700s, nestles in the vineyards just a few miles from the Agriturismo, and has a cosy and welcoming open fireplace or ‘fogolar’, reminiscent of the old kitchens of historic houses in Friuli.Guests will be able to taste all these products at the Osteria di Villa Fredda, still managed by the Braidot family or, more precisely, by Luca Braidot – Mauro’s brother – and his wife Barbara.
